Non-permeable Membrane & Caulking

3M™ Air and Vapor Barrier 3015NP is an air, moisture and water impermeable film membrane with an aggressive, high-tack pressure sensitive acrylic adhesive. It reduces air leakage and uncontrolled airflow from the building envelope, prevents moisture ingress and helps improve indoor air quality. It does not require the use of a primer on most construction surfaces.

Build smarter, even in the toughest conditions 3M™ Air and Vapor Barrier 3015NP is a film membrane that is impermeable to air, moisture, water and vapor. It is comprised of an aggressive high-tack acrylic adhesive on a multi-layer elastomeric film that self-seals around screws, nails and staples to further reduce moisture intrusion, and passes ASTM D1970 both before and after thermal cycling. The adhesive is compatible with a wide range of common sealants including synthetic rubber, butyl, polyurethane, silicone and silane-terminated hybrid sealants, and sticks well to common construction substrates including concrete, concrete block, anodized aluminum, galvanized metal, plywood, extruded polystyrene and most exterior gypsum sheathing. This allows for primer-free application from lightweight rolls and up to 40% faster installation* compared to traditional air barriers that require a primer. The film is slightly translucent, providing a clean look while still allowing enough visibility to identify screws in the underlying sheathing and thus reduce the risk of the next contractor missing studs. This product can be applied at surface temperatures ranging from 0°F (-18°C) up to 150°F (66°C), has a service temperature range from -40°F (-40°C) up to 240°F (116°C), and can with stand up to 12 months of direct UV exposure. This barrier has been evaluated by the Air Barrier Association of America. *As compared to traditional primer-applied air barriers. Independent Observation and White Paper written by Lee Durston, Director of Building Science and Dani Ittner, Building Envelope Architect, BCRA Inc., September 2012. Recommended Applications • Air, vapor and water barrier for new and remedial commercial construction • Installed on exterior wall sheathing and behind exterior cladding • Transition building envelope from one substrate to another, or other openings and penetrations Bringing Better Ideas to the Surface Through Science and Innovation In our 3M Industrial Adhesives and Tapes Division, we apply the science of adhesion to deliver innovative solutions that improve the design and manufacturing processes of companies around the world. Thermal insulation

Is the reduction of heat transfer & the transfer  between objects of differing temperature between objects in thermal contact or in range of radiative influence. Thermal insulation can be achieved with specially engineered methods or processes, as well as with suitable object shapes and materials.

Thermal conductivity k is measured in watts-per-meter . This is because heat transfer measured as power has been found to be approximately proportional to

  • difference of temperature

  • the surface area of thermal contact

  • the inverse of the thickness of the material

Vapor Permeable Membrane

3M™ Air Barrier with Permeable Backing 3015VP is a self-adhered vapor permeable, wind and water resistant membrane with an aggressive acrylic adhesive and a breathable film. Primer is not required on most construction surfaces. This reverse-wound roll allows for longer roll lengths, increasing contractor productivity.

No Primer Required on Most Common Construction Materials Ensuring reliable performance and quick installation, 3M™ Air Barrier with Permeable Backing 3015VP eliminates the need for a high VOC solvent based primer prior to application. This tough barrier film seals around nails while remaining conformable and flexible, yet it is difficult to tear. Quick installation offers a positive impact on project scheduling.

Recommended Applications

· Building construction

· Climate control

Membrane Self-Seals to Reduce Moisture Intrusion 3M™ Air Barrier with Permeable Backing 3015VP works in varied climates, which permits an extended application surface temperature range between 0°F (-18°C) and 150°F (66°C) and a service temperature range from -40°F (-40°C) to 240°F (116°C). It self-seals if penetrated, quickly closing around nails and staples to further reduce moisture intrusion. Use this material

to help prevent moisture condensation by keeping the air temperature curve higher than the dew point throughout the wall.

Stops Air Leakage, Protects Air Quality and Guards Against Moisture Ingress Using the most advanced barrier technology, the 3M™ Air Barrier with Permeable Backing 3015VP was developed through expertise in all areas of building science and indoor climate control. It was engineered to provide exacting control over moisture, air and vapor. The membrane stops air leakage, protects air quality and guards against moisture ingress.

UV resistant up to 12 months, this innovative system also brings unprecedented cost efficiency. A one-step membrane means higher productivity. The membrane allows for easy application, with no need for priming, saving installation time and labor costs. Lightweight and easy to use, a standard 30” roll of 3M™ Air Barrier with Permeable Backing 3015VP weighs 26 pounds, yet it outperforms thicker, competitive membranes weighing up to two times more.

Spray Foam

Spray Polyurethane Foam is a polyurethane (PU) based, single component, very qualified heat and sound insulation product that can be applied by being sprayed on surfaces through its special application device. The propellant in the can sprays the chemical component to surfaces through application gun

R-value is the term given to thermal resistance to heat flow. The higher the R-value of an insulation product, the more effective the insulation properties. Spray polyurethane foam comes in a range of densities and cell structure. Low density foams are referred to as open cell SPF while higher density foams are referred to as closed cell foam. 1.8-2 pound polyurethane foam has the highest R-value of readily available spray foam insulation used in homes and buildings.

Polyurethane is a closed-cell foam insulation material that initially contains a low-conductivity gas in its cells.[5] As a result of the high thermal resistance of the gas, spray polyurethane insulation typically has an initial R-value around R-3.4 to R-6.7 per inch.[5] In comparison, glass wool typically has an R-Value of only R-3 to R-4 per inch.[6]

Foam insulation blocks all three forms of heat transfer:

Conductive heat transfer

The flow of thermal energy through a substance from a higher to a lower temperature region. Foam thermoset plastics reduce conductive heat transfer due in part to having very loose molecular bonds; In addition the cells of the installed spray foam are either filled with air in the case of open cell foam or HFC's (365mfc227ea245fa) or H(C)FO's (1336mzz(Z), 1233zd(E)) in closed cell foam.

Radiant heat transfer

The process by which heat energy in the form of light (usually IR unless the substrate is hot enough to glow in the visible range) is emitted more strongly by warm surfaces and absorbed by other materials especially those of low IR reflectivity (think matte black finish). Radiant heat transfer does not require a medium. Foam insulation materials, such as spray foam insulation, are opaque to thermal radiation, like most solid materials.

Convective heat transfer

Heat which is created elsewhere that is transported by means of a fluid, such as water or in our case air. Spray foam insulation's most important attribute is the ability to air seal creating a custom airtight envelope within the building structure. The added benefit to air sealing is the ability to block convective heat transfer from interior to exterior during heating months and vice versa during cooling months, as the heat cannot escape through gaps in the buildings envelope without the aid of air movement from infiltration as a means of transport.
